: GEDDES — Metro Mattress Corp. will move its headquarters next year from the 18,000-square-foot facility at Oswego Road in Clay to a larger building on John Glenn Boulevard in Geddes.
“We’re really moving due to expansion of the business. We simply have outgrown the facility here,” says David Shiroff, president and CEO of Metro Mattress.
Metro Mattress bought its new 25,000-square-foot building through Rochester–based J. Fiorie & Company, a commercial real-estate agency, for just over $1 million, Shiroff says. He plans to move his staff into the facility in January 2008. The mattress dealership purchased the one-story, 47-year-old vacant building at 3545 John Glenn Blvd. on Aug. 22 from Pemco Properties VII, LLC, according to the Onondaga County Office of Real Property Tax Services.
Metro Mattress will retain its present facility with plans to expand it once the headquarters offices and warehouse move to the new building, Shiroff says.
Metro Mattress is in the process of remodeling the Geddes location. He says Metro Mattress intends to spend more than $1 million on renovations. Citizens Bank, a unit of Rhode Island–based Citizens Financial Group, is financing the purchase and renovations. Rochester–based FSI General Contractors is the general contractor and Syracuse–based J.S. Hagan Architect P.C. is doing the architectural work.
Shiroff declined to disclose revenue information for Metro Mattress. In a February 2007 article in The Central New York Business Journal, Shiroff predicted his firm would generate $30 million in sales in 2007.
Once renovated, the new headquarters will include a 3,500-square-foot regional clearance center, more than 4,000 square feet of corporate offices on a second floor mezzanine, with the remaining space serving as a warehouse. Between 45 and 50 people will work in the new headquarters building, Shiroff says.
The location will also include a 1,000-square-foot community room that will be made available to local nonprofit organizations in need of space for meetings and small functions. The room will hold up to 100 people. Shiroff says when he bought the building he wanted to create a space that could be made available to nonprofit and volunteer organizations from across Upstate.
“In the past few years, I became aware that some of the most respected non-profit organizations in the area did not have access to proper facilities for organization events such as meetings and other activities where the expected turnout exceeded their internal capacity,” Shiroff says.
Metro Mattress has operated from the 7608 Oswego Road address for 15 years. The dealership started in 1977. Metro Mattress’ first headquarters and store was at Park Street in Syracuse.
Shiroff acquired Metro Mattress in 2000, when the company had only nine locations, from former owner Diane Carlon. The company now has 29 stores with plans to open a 30th location in Buffalo in December.
Metro Mattress says it will open seven more stores in 2008.
Metro Mattress expanded into the Buffalo market earlier this year, and the Southern Tier in 2006. The mattress-dealership expanded into Rochester and Utica in the early 1990s and Albany in 2005.
The corporation currently employs 200, including store sales staff, and plans to add 30 to 50 new positions by the end of 2008, Shiroff says.
